Target Audience

17/01/10

Our film will be mainly aimed at males, although females may watch it also. This is because studies have shown that horror films build adrenaline which males prefer to females– this is shown mainly through the fact that more males play and prefer sports than females.

The age of the people we are aiming the film at is 15-25 because our opening sequence is set in school and is casting teenagers so it would appeal more to younger people, as it can relate more to them than older people. Moreover, younger people generally find horror films more exciting than the older generation.

The race of the majority of the population in the UK are British white people so it is rational to assume that our film will be watched more by white people than black, so this is the ethnic race we are targeting. However our main character has a black ethnic background so the film may appeal to the black population as well.

The town we have set our film in is mainly populated with people who are of a middle and working class, so we will be targeting people of these classes.

Office Space

16/01/10

An opening sequence should include opening credits a title credits and a soundtrack. It could also be used to show an introduction to the genre of the film, establish the setting and introducing the main character/s and perhaps other members of the cast to the audience.

The opening sequence for the 1999 comedy Office Space uses most of these functions in a very effective way. It is easy to tell straight away that the film is the opening credits. The font used looks very comical; it is a bright blue colour which could indicate feelings of happiness and amusement. The style of the font is fun and adventurous suggesting that the film will create this kind of atmosphere. The type of music used is another quick indication to the genre of the film. The music is very upbeat jazz representing cheerfulness and adding to the humour in the scene. There is more music later on in the opening sequence that also suggests that the film is a comedy. One of the main characters in a car starts to sing along to a rap song on the radio. This creates humour because it is unexpected of him to be singing, or even listening to, that kind of music because of the way he looks, which is not following the stereotypical person who would be expected to listen to and sing along with that kind of song.

The setting of the film is shown at the start of the film by an establishing shot of a motorway with a lot of traffic. The opening sequence then has a series of shots introducing the audience to the main characters in the film who are all in cars stuck in traffic. However the shots focus more on one individual which suggests that he will be the main character throughout the whole film. The actions of the characters in the cars are probably the biggest factors that create a humorous mood to the film.

Influences

11/01/10

Kill Bill's opening sequence is an influence for our thoughts on our own opening sequence. Kill Bill begins with a flashback in black and white to distinctly show it is not in the present setting. By using the diegetic sound of the woman's heavy breathing to create tension and suspense which can be very useful for our own production as we are creating horror movie and these elements can be included.

The second influence is the opening sequence of Halloween. Like our film, Halloween is a horror film. The film begins with a point of view shot using a handheld camera to create suspense and mystery. We are contemplating using these two elements in our film. The music is also a great influence as it again creates suspense and establishes the mood for the horror film. Above is the trailer for Halloween.

The third influence for our film is called 'Eden Lake'. The opening sequence for this film is the most influential for us as it begins with a flash forward. The flash forward is very short clips that flash between the credits of a woman who is screaming and crying - clearly being tortured. The flash forward was in total about ten seconds then immediately went to the present day of that same woman teaching a class of young children. From the first few seconds of the film, the audience immediately know that this film is a horror by the flash forward and even the opening credits as the font style was quite bulky and red - a common colour used to foreshadow danger or horrors. Above is the poster and trailer for Eden Lake.
